There is not a lot that can be done to prepare for an aircraft emergency, but one thing I saw on the Mayday video series (season 9, episode 1) may save your life. In August, 1985 a Boeing 737 had to abandon take-off. The plane came to a safe stop but was quickly engulfed in flames, and emergency evacuation began. Because of the panic among the passengers 55 passengers died, mostly from smoke inhalation, before they could be evacuated.
Many people could possibly have been saved with a proper filter mask that can handle dense smoke. The minimum quality mask would be the readily available N95, or one could use the more advanced P100, available from 3M.
